Asakayama General Hospital has a long history since 1922. The project is the landscape design of approximately 9,000m2site including the first floor landscape area, the third floor rooftop rehabilitation garden, and the fourth floor palliative care garden. The hospital consists of the new general department with 223 beds, and also the existing department of psychiatry with 840 beds and welfare facilities across the was originally built in 1922 by cutting through the hill called Kaorigaoka, but the area currently surrounding the hospital is residential. The white tower is designated as an important cultural property in Sakai City, and the lush greenery on site acts as a landscape icon that reminds people of the hill in the old days. The project intends to pass down the history of the hospital to the next generations. The goals are to increase sustainability as an essential hospital to the community, to keep providing the medical care, to create an attractive and good place to work for the staff, and to be accepted by the community by improving the environment.
First floor landscape design
The hospital floating in the mixed forest as a concept, the spaces with warmth within the natural environment, unlike the typical hospital, were designed. The hospital is open to the community with the intention of creating “an environment surrounded by soft greenery” and “a human scale space designed like a garden”.
The extended sidewalk forms a garden at the street corner for the patients and neighbors to relax. The entrance garden has stone sculptures by a sculptor, Masatoshi Izumi, and their impression of natural strength emphasizes the dignity of the historic hospital. The artworks provide both visual and tactile interests. They act as benches, and the garden also serves as a meeting place. Semi-flexible pavement with a warm color was used for the large rotary area instead of asphalt to avoid the cold hospital image and to make it a part of the garden.
Third floor rooftop rehabilitation garden: plaza of hope
The rehabilitation garden is a part of the convalescent rehabilitation ward. The space was planned through the workshops with rehabilitation staff, doctors, and nurses. Design elements include walking routes with different paving materials to increase patients’ motor functions, courses with various slopes, raised beds for horticultural therapy, and vegetable gardens. All of them contain rehabilitation programs while forming a beautiful garden.
